This is such a lovely rose but does anyone know the coldest zone it can survive in?

Summer Wine should be okay in zone 5 with good winter protection.

I am growing it successfully in zone 5 in the Fingerlakes region of central NY state. Have not had any winter die back. Will post some pics this coming season.

Have one up against the wall of our house. Just going into its second summer and it bloomed very nicely. Canes are a good 8' and there was no die-back in our zone 5 area (Spokane, WA)
Very nice fragrance. HMF says "mild," I'd class it as strong, but maybe that's just ours.
Update 5/14/11: It survived this last, tough, winter very nicely. I do need to add that it is placed on the west side of the house, close to the house. I expect that there was enough residual heat to protect it. Still... a Rainbow's End Climber, right next to it, died back to the ground. We're really looking forward to that wonderful Souvenir fragrance.

I agree it's a very nice and strong fragrance; a bit like Sharifa Asma!

Does Ilse Krohn need protection if the temp is below freesing? The gardener in Stockholm did not mention this. And if needed, how do you do it?

I've been growing Ilse Krohn Superior for many years in my zone 5 garden in Ithaca, NY. Even after the very harsh winter of 2004, I have never found tip dieback from the cold. I think it is the best disease resistant, cold hardy, repeat blooming, fragrant white climber.

I have been growing Sarah Van Fleet in my zone 5, Ithaca, NY, garden for 7 years. It is almost never without flowers from early June until a killing frost. My bushes of this rose are over 8 feet tall and at least as wide. Strongly fragrant and disease free, it is one of my favorite rugosas.

And here in hot dry Perth, the story is exactly the same, apart from the bit about frost. Beautiful, fragrant, healthy and very reliable.

HMF members from different hemispheres exchanging information on a specific plant. It doesn't get any better than this! Thank you. We at HMF promise to make the process easier.
