Rose (member) Garden

Listing last updated on Wed Aug 2024
Brenham, Texas
United States
USDA Zone: 8b (15 to 20 F / -9.4 to 6.7 C)
Front yard--East: bed of Rosa 'Nearly Wild' X 12 or so, with allysum and seasonal annuals in front (pansies, as of 12/09). Zepherine Droughin climbing rose next to the front steps. 'New Dawn' climbing rose on far side of the bed. Confederate Rose is at the corner of the house. Plan for 2010: Island bed in/near center of front yard, surrounding a smallish white or clear pink crepe myrtle, with maybe two or three small David Austin shrub roses, gompherena globosa and agapanthus..

Front yard--West: Big pecan in center of yard, with ferns around it. Foundation hedging is all azaleas (white, dark pink and pale/spotted pink, with one ugly bare space where the camellia standard died (to be replaced with Encore Azalea). At corner of foundation is a well-established fatsia, which is getting tall enough now that it can be under planted with something sweet and small (annuals? violets?). At corner is another pecan. Spring 2010: Removed ferns around large pecan tree, and planted French Blend tulips--a big success!! But short-lived. Too bad--but I plan to repeat the tulips next spring, too, even if they only last a month or so.

Side yard--North: All pink azaleas, except for a nandina (overgrown!) under kitchen window, until NW corner of house. There, another large pecan lives, surrounded by a circle of dark green liriope. Between the liriope and the azaleas is another ground cover that I can't find the name of. Will plant a shi-shi gashira camellia in a circle of the liriope, next to the iron railings at the back porch.

Back yard--South/SouthWest: kidney shaped lawn, surrounded by beds. The bed against the back fence is simply five Natchez crepe myrtles. The other three sides are mostly roses with companion plants (see lists). Daffodil bulbs are planted under the crepe myrtles, as of Spring 2010. Hopefully, they will naturalize and multiply next spring.

Side yard--East: Lined by 8 pink crepe myrtles, very old, with lovely peeling 'skin'. Foundation plants are a mess, consisting of dead hydrangeas, messy ferns. Needs major clean up.
