Queen Maxima will visit this Rose-garden next month and baptize a rose to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the Rosarium of Winschoten. See: https://oldambt.groningen.nl/over-oldambt/nieuws-uit-oldambt/koningin-maxima-te-gast-in-rosarium-winschoten

The website doesn't exist any more. The button might be removed. It is discussed now (in the city-council) for financial reasons, whether the roses should be flail-mown instead of being pruned.

Thanks Jay-Jay. Removed. I recall reading an article about mechanical pruning being discontinued in a public garden because the rubbish underneath, like cigarette butts, bottle tops, paper litter etc. then became highly visible and looked simply dreadful.

Hi Patricia, I saw many results of this way of pruning in my town: lots of plants/roses died by this treatment or succumbed under the thriving weeds! Most of the roses treated that way were badly wounded or got diseases... and of many of them only the rootstock survived. Wild/native roses seem to be more resilient towards this treatment. I Hope they decide different in Winschoten. But even the Rosarium lies under siege as for survival.

I do hope it does survive Jay-Jay. In a world that is sometimes too full of violence and horror, the peace and calm that a rose garden can bring is beyond price.

Every year a "Groen markt" (green-market) is organized in this Rosarium. Each year with another theme. A rose-queen is chosen. Lots of stands/market stalls sell their goods and plants and some rose-nurseries sell and show their roses. This film from Youtube was made in 2010: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TVHYZcT4wik&feature=player_embedded
