David Ruston, South Australia. Roses of Distinction.
'Pharaoh' can be recognized from afar in the garden for the fiery red of the heavily textured open flowers. 'Pharaoh' has an intensity of colour which hitherto was only found in floribundas. It is unique in colour and unsurpassed in substance and its great flat flowers have appeal to all lovers of beauty except I fear those who can see exhibition form only!
Book  (1971)  Page(s) 41.

An outstanding example of a rose that keeps its colour is Pharaoh by Meilland; it starts a fiery, fiery scarlet, and no matter what the weather does it dies a fiery scarlet. Unfortunately, though a wonderful colour, the plant is not free in its bloom.

Pharaoh Medium red Hybrid Tea (Pat. 2859). A splendid new rose with real color and character. The vibrant, velvety dark red is apparent in the large, well-pointed bud - and as the big double flower opens, the color becomes even brighter and more glowing. The upper side of the petals shows luminous orange tones, while the underside keeps the dark red in contrast. Stems are very strong, and flowers have well-placed, broad petals of great lasting ability, which makes them ideal for cutting. They are ruffled at the edge, showing a very pretty cluster of stamens when the heavy-textured bloom reaches its full size. The plant presents are fine strong appearance. It is an upright grower, medium size to tall.  The leathery dark green leaves of thick texture are bronzy when young. 'Pharaoh' has already won three gold medals – in Spain, Switzerland and Holland - and it should be a prize-winner in this country too.

Pharaoh A very bright red of medium growth and very attractive foliage. The colour is outstanding but it is a bit short on petals and blooms. Could only be classed as a decorative rose.
