.......there may be some repeat blooming, but rarely any hips.......the plant is said to grow to as much as 10 feet (3 meters), but some sources indicate a lesser height.

rarely any hips? unless the plant I was recently looking at was mislabeled, it had dozens of hips.

There are many references and photos to this rose having hips.
By placing this reference in Members Comments I was probably hoping to invite comment as to why the author wrote “rarely any hips”.

does anyone know if this rose has a single seed within it's hip? I collected alot of seed recently and messed up my names, but this lot was from hips that contained a single seed only in each hip. Pretty sure it was from Pomifera duplex, but would like to confirm

I don't know what the unknown parent is, but Duplex is very unlike my various specimens of Rosa pomifera (villosa) growing on the farm.

They all have very few prickles on the canes, no fuzz or prickles on the buds, and absolutely no prickles on the hips. A lot like Rosa canina canes and leaves, except 4' tall, the blooms nod and are smaller, have much larger hips, and the foliage is soft.

Duplex seems like a porcupine compared to Rosa villosa.

The buds have the most delightful, sweet fragrance.
