"Roses and the frost at Stamford" by Charles Laxton
During the nights of the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th of January my thermometer registered here, in a walled garden at five feet from the ground, and in the open, 23°, 21°, 22°, and 22° of frost respectively... The snow here froze on the branches, and was three inches deep on the ground.... My list of uninjured (No. 1) may therefore be relied upon as containing only thoroughly hardy sorts.

The Hybrid Perpetual Rose.
Carmine and Cherry-coloured.
Madame Heraud, Madame Furtado — a perfect pattern of elegance in shape — Charles Margottin, Beauty of Waltham, John Hopper, Madame Victor Verdier, Madame Boutin, Duchesse de Caylus, Denis Helye, and Victor Verdier, are the 'crême de la crême' of this group, and no roses can be more charming; they all, or nearly all, have an intensity of rose colour, if the expression may be used, which is of all colours the most pleasing; for do we not say 'the rosy morn,' the rosy hues of life, and employ many other expressions, all denoting the invariable charm of this most delightful of all tints?

Roses in 1864.
Madame Victor Verdier has been shown in superb condition, the colour a clear, lively, rosy crimson, likely, we think, to rank equal with King's Acre and Maréchal Suchet...

12.  H. Laurentius, beautiful crimson red, cupped.
13.  John Nasmith [sic], lively crimson red, veined with purple and violet.

15.  La Duchesse de Morny, beautiful tender rose; reverse of petals silvery rose.
16.  Madame Victor Verdier, bright cherry rose.
Too many, Mons. Verdier, too many; yet he has given us some good Roses- Prince Camille de Rohan, Professor Koch, and others.  9 looks well on paper; so does 10.  11 has the fault of two colours.  12 ought to be good.  13 not full enough.  14, good.  15, same fault as 11.  16, good- that is, so far as description goes.

Magazine  (Oct 1863)  Page(s) 224.
