There is a lot of unknown with Lilac Charm's parents I think, something much more modern in that lineage than is evident in face value. Because NEWS is really modern in habit, bloom size, there is basically no scent.....the plant shows no traces of gallica or species, it looks and behaves just like any modern bedder. Here in NE Florida the summer blooms are pointless: they don't fully open, they tend to have misshapen petals (overly ruffled?) if they do open, the color is washed out grayish magenta. In the spring and fall the blooms are huge and vivid. Surprisingly free of fungal diseases. Repeat bloom is fast.
Although not the most fragrant in the garden, News has quite a respectable spicy perfume, much more than she is given credit for. And the color--you will want to eat it!
I love this rose ! I have found it to be more fragrant during warm weather cycles. Fragrance or no fragrance, this rose must be a part of my garden.

Lyn, What size to you think News would attain in the Midwest (Zone 5-6)? I bought it to go at the front of the border after reading that it was a 2' rose, but since then I've seen reports that it can grow to 4', which would make it more of a mid-border plant. What's your take on this? Thanks in advance...
This rose was hybridized by LeGrice in England. At lower latitudes, the plants get a longer growing season and more sunlight, so, in my experience, they seem to grow larger than the reported heights in most rose books and registered heights based on British climates. Since, I live in California, where all roses seem to grow larger, I would place 'News' at least mid-border, certainly not in front of the border.
