I just saw that Stardance is listed by Roses Unlimited as part of their Ben Williams collection! I don't know where they found their stock, but I'm happy they did. I haven't ordered from RU in years, but I remember always being satisfied with their roses.

I have access to a much better-quality camera now, so I'll try to get some decent photos of Stardance. Our weather was just awful a couple of months ago when the first flush should have been at its peak - alternating drought and deluge - so most of my roses simply balled and rotted. But Stardance is starting its second flush right now.

This seems to be quite a rare rose at this point.
It would be nice to have it spread around a bit so it isn't lost.

Hi, Robert - I will try to save some cuttings of Stardance for you next spring when I prune it, if you'd like to try it. It's old enough now that propagating it from cuttings should be legal.
Please don't reply asking for cuttings if you aren't Robert! Go to the "cuttings" tab instead.

I originally bought Stardance from the much missed Behnke Nurseries in Beltsville, MD. I thought it was cute, and the damask scent was a plus. As far as I know, I may be the only person growing this Ben Williams gem.
My plant of "Stardance" suffered from a lot of dieback the past couple springs - so much so that there weren't really any cuttings worth saving. It's looking nice this spring, though. My garden is much shadier than before, due to the vigorous growth of our lovely willow oak (Quercus phellos).
Fellow rosarians: I'm thinking that my "Stardance" plant should be in the hands of someone who can give the best of care, and perhaps root cuttings of it. It's a pretty, sturdy, sweet-smelling little thing that really should be back in commerce.
I know how to pack and mail plants. Robert has first dibs.

I just uploaded six photos of Stardance to HMF. Please let me know if you would like any specific photos of plant parts, etc.
I also checked Stardance's aroma. The fragrance wasn't super strong, but it was definitely Damask. I've been suffering from a terrible bout with allergies lately, and my sniffer isn't working too well ... this may mean that Stardance is actually more fragrant than I can discern.
Also, if anybody who sells own-root roses is interested in a cutting, I might be able to arrange mailing one. This year, the plant doesn't have many canes, though. I can't figure out why - we had a mild winter in Maryland. Perhaps Stardance prefers a cold one!

I'm surprised that this rose never became more popular. My plant came from a retail nursery in the Washington, DC area in the early 1990s. I bought it specifically for its old-fashioned blooms and its damask-like fragrance. The fragrance was quite strong to my nose; I'm surprised that it's listed here as "mild." I'll need to re-evaluate the fragrance when it blooms this year. Stardance requires very little care, even here in blackspot-prone Baltimore, MD. Of course, I'm not that picky about my roses - if they still have leaves in August, I'm happy. Every year I forget to photograph Stardance for HMF it when it blooms ... I just looked out the window and it has a bud right now. Photos to come!
