Nola Simpson. Final Analysis 1992-93.
'Black Jade' (BENblack); Benardella 1985; 'Sheri Anne' x 'Laguna'; black red; 96 reports on 243 plants; 1-5 years; 65cms; 7.4 rating. One of the most widely grown of the miniature roses and has been very well reported on from all over the country. Its chief attribute is the genuine black red colour of the blooms which are well shaped and open to reveal lovely gold stamens. There are not a lot of petals to the bloom but the substance is extremely good and last a long time. The sun does burn and brown the aging petals on the bush and it has been found to be better to grow it in partial shade and the blooms picked in the bud. The plants grow well and have dark glossy foliage to set off the blooms. Health is reasonably good, although powdery mildew and black spot can trouble it at times. It is a good exhibiting rose and features a lot in our rose shows. Discounting its few shortcomings it is a very worthwhile miniature to grow and there is none other quite like it.

Nola Simpson. Review of Newer Roses for 1991-92 Season.
'Black Jade' (BENblack); Benardella 1985; 'Sheri Anne' x 'Laguna'; dark red; 23 reports on 70 plants; 1-7 years; 55cms; 7.6 rating. All reporters except one from Auckland rate this mini between 7 and 8. Auckland down grades to 6 because of blackspot and flowers fading to an ugly brown. The rest think it is one of the better mins, all say flowers burn in the sun - need to grow in partial shade, exhibition shape opening to nice full blooms with gold stamens, petals have excellent substance, almost black in colour, gets powdery mildew often and the mites fancy it, dark green glossy foliage. A worthwhile mini.
