When looking up the lineage of a rose or trying to see if a modern Rose has a particular species in the background the database only gives first generation crosses. So what I would like to be able to do is see you which modern cultivars of roses contain a specific species in there background. This seems to be an impossible task for this database and I’m wondering why? Could I possibly be doing something wrong?

Maybe I don't understand the question, but it seems to me that it would be a straightforward task to go up the genealogical chart of the rose's parents until you hit a species rose. So if you have Monsieur Merde and Madame Bilgewater as parents to your rose, you would look up the parents of both Monsieur Merde and Madame Bilgewater, then look up their parents etc. You could use a standard genealogical chart to keep track of the grandparents, great grandparents, etc.
