Don Sheppard. Symposium of Hybrid Tea Roses, Canterbury Rose Society 1980.
'John Waterer'. Three reports of this rose bred by McGredy in 1970 and twelfth equal on our list with 'Fragrant Hour'. All report it as being an unusually healthy and well growing rose in their gardens. It grows average to "not too tall" and does not sprawl. One member does say that occasionally he has found light traces of mildew on some foliage. The bush is well covered - good mid green foliage, reddish when young, which is well spaced and balanced on the stem. In spring the blooms are a large, deep red, and often with that blackish edging to some petals. The colour is quite vibrant and to go with it there is a slight pleasant fragrance. Some disbudding is needed. The later flowers often come rather on the small side. The repeat is fast and reliable, basals come easily too. It can be used often on the show bench, but it is as a good honest garden rose that 'John Waterer' is at his best.

'John  Waterer'   Medium +    Deep crimson     Remontant  P2    H1  **
A  deep crimson rose of upright growth. The colour is usually marked, but not spoilt, by going black towards the edges, really a collapse of the crimson in the sun. If the deep  colour of 'John Waterer' and the scent of 'Alec's Red' could come together, we should have a red rose indeed. Raised by Sam  McGredy  from  'King of Hearts' x `Hanne'.  Introduced 1970.
Book  (1977)  Page(s) 30.
