I used to have Yolande d'Aragon in my old garden in Livorno. It was a grafted plant, a sparse grower and a shy bloomer, but the flowers were just the most gorgeous possible: flat and always perfectly quartered, very large, divinely fragrant. The leaves were nice looking too, quite large but with true old rose character.
Never managed to make that plant really thrive, though.
Now, I want to buy a new one for my new garden, and it'll be on own roots. I'll try to give her the best position possible (which it seems includes a few hours of partial shade). I think she would really deserve it. Here in Genoa, summers are markedly less hot then in Livorno, so I'm a little bit confident it'll do better here.
I'm also experiencing very good, almost explosive growth and blooming with two other Portlands on own roots: Comte de Chambord and Rose de Resht. They're still in 6 l containers, yet they're looking extremely happy, suckering and/or giving new basal shoots like crazy, and in the while, also giving a lot of flowers. Hope Y.D.A. will react somewhat like that too.

We have a Yolande that is own root and only a year and a half old... and we don't know how she should be pruned. We are in zone 9b, and she has several long canes, and some shorter growth. Do you recommending pruning any of it? Thanks for your input.

Hi
I prune it slightly to keep it from growing too much and I've never had any problems.

This is a rose with broad leaves that break easily with hail.

I wanted to compare this plant with a foundling "Von Doussa Children", which has sharp prickles but sheds quite a few of them. I could find only 1 or 2 on Yolande, but I note another member's comment that it has sharp prickles. Would someone who grows it please post prickle pictures, and compare with the Von Doussa Children file.
Neither of them sets hips. Yolande is taller-growing in my garden, but is in a much more favoured position. Both have flowers now (winter, zone 9b) but there are more on "Von Doussa Children".

Thank you. Yolande is on my buy-list. Previously I wasn't sure about the prickles, but thanks to your review I'm placing an order as own-root. Will post close-up of its branches next year.
