As to Von Siebold's introductions, they were partly sold to Prince Frederic of the Netherlands, and never passed into commercial hands; the rest, as far as I remember, were bought by Messrs. E. H. Krelage & Son, of Haarlem. Those given over to commerce were—

Paeonia Montan. Sims.
Notre collection de Pivoines en arbre, importée du Japon dans notre Établissement, provient des jardins impériaux de Yedo et de Mijako et contient les variétés les plus distinguées de cet empire. Les variétés se distinguent par des fleurs tres grandes, mais simples ou semi-doubles, blanches, incarnates; lilas et de couleur de pêche; des fleurs rose-changeantes ; rouge-sanguines et de carmin; et par des fleurs rouge-pourprées et cuivrées, striées de brun et de rouge foncé, les pétales extérieures de quelques unes panachées de blanc et de vert. Il y en a dont les fleurs sont odorantes (P. Impératrice de France et P. Germania). Mr. le professeur John Lindley qui a bien voulu en examiner les dessins faits d'après nature , a reconnu et certifié la différence botanique de nos pivoines de celles introduites par Mr. Fortune de la Chine. "I have examined the drawings of the Peonies, brought to England by M. von Siebold, and I can state, that they are very fine things, for the most part are different from any thing sent to the Horticultural Society by Fortune."

Chinese Tree Pæonies. — Pæonia Moutan.
These are the most splendid and showy of all flowering shrubs, and among the most rare.
The flowers are mostly fragrant, and all are double, unless denoted otherwise.  They are perfectly hardy, and will withstand the winters of our most northern States and the Canadas.  They bloom in May, ten to fifteen days before the Chinese Herbaceous varieties.
The following are imported varieties.  We can supply extra size plants of most of the varieties, at a moderate advance in prices.

Das 1. Heft dieses längst erwarteten Journales, was sich die Bekanntmachung der Kultur-, Schmuck- und Zierpflanzen, in sofern diese aus den niederländischen Kolonien in Amerika und in Asien, einschliesslich Japan's, stammen, zur hauptsächlichen Aufgabe gestellt hat, liegt uns vor. Der Inhalt ist mannigfaltig und interessant, wie man auch nicht anders erwarten kann. Der Reigen wird mit der Beschreibung und Abbildung einer Form der baumartigen Gichtrose (Paeonia Moutan Sims), die den Namen Impératrice de France führt, eröffnet. Es ist eine schöne einfache Blume von pfirsichrother Farbe mit etwas gefranzt-gezähnten Blumenblättern. Die von v. Siebold aus Japan mitgebrachten 42 Sorten sind von denen, welche von Fortune aus China nach England gebracht wurden, verschieden und zeichnen sich besonders durch ihre bedeutendere Grösse (30–36 Centimeter, also oft über 1 Fuss im Durchmesser) aus. Die ersten 12 Sorten, welche 1848 blühten, sind in den Besitz des Prinzen Friedrich der Niederlande übergegangen. Von den übrigen sind weissblumig: Königin Viktoria, Königin der Belgier, Flora, Königin von Preussen, Prinzess Metternich, Herzogin von Orleans, Nymphäa, Prinzess von Preussen und Prinzess Amalie. Rosa sind die Blumen bei: Ida, Grossfürstin Helene. Prinzess Demidoff, Madame de Cock, Kaiserin von Oesterreich; pfirsich-roth und lila: Grossherzog von Sachsen - Weimar und Al. v. Humboldt. Mehrfarbige Blumen haben und zwar mit dunkelrosa als Grundfarbe: Fürst Metternich, Kaiser von Frankreich, de Vriese; roth mit Karmin und Purpur: König von Würtemberg, v. Siebold, Baron von Hügel, König von Preussen, Kaiser von Oesterreich, König der Belgier, Prinz von Preussen, John Lindley; dunkelbraunroth und oft weiss oder grün panachirt: Prinz Albert: endlich purpurroth und weiss und lila panachirt: Kaiser Alexander II. Dazu gesellt sich noch Paeonia Moutan Germania mit lebhaft-karmoisinrothen, an der Basis schwarz-gefleckten Blumenblättern.

The 1. issue of this long-awaited journal, which has made its main task the publication of cultivated, ornamental and ornamental plants, insofar as they come from the Dutch colonies in America and in Asia, including Japan, is in front of us. With pink flowers: Ida, Grand Duchess Helene. Princess Demidoff, Madame de Cock, Empress of Austria; peach-red and purple: Grand Duke of Saxony - Weimar and Al. v. Humboldt. Multi-colored flowers with a dark pink base color: Prince Metternich, Emperor of France, de Vriese; red with carmine and purple: King of Würtemberg, v. Siebold, Baron von Hügel, King of Prussia, Emperor of Austria, King of the Belgians, Prince of Prussia, John Lindley; dark brown-red and often white or green mottled: Prince Albert: finally purple-red and white and purple mottled: Emperor Alexander II. In addition to these Paeonia Moutan Germania with vivid crimson-red petals, spotted black at the base.
