There were also hundreds of lilac pinks, magenta. pinks and plain magentas, most of which were very unattractive. Many closely resembled Banksi. Typical varieties were 'Archduc Ludovico,' 'Athlete,' 'Beaute de Twickel,' 'Jules PirIot,' 'La Ville de St. Denis,' 'Morris,' 'Princess Louise,' 'Reine Amelie,' 'Reine des Fleurs,' 'Triomphe de Vandermaelen,' and 'van Houttei.' All these varieties proved, in Holland and France, easy to propagate in comparison with the later introduced Japanese varieties. Which varieties bearing European names were actually raised from seed in Europe and which were Chinese varieties renamed is not too definitely established.

After forcing, tree peonies require two or three years for recuperation. Because the blooms of double-flowered varieties last longer upon the plant, those varieties are best for forcing. Reine Elizabeth, Lactea, Jules Pirlot and Lord Macartnay are excellent for this purpose.

In examining a collection of Herbaceous and Tree Pæonies lately, we have decided that (although all are ornamental) there are in reality but a few worthy of cultivation. Of these the following is a list:
Tree Pæonies: Bijou de Chusan, Carolina, Colonel Malcolm, Comte de Flandres, Donckelaarii, Elizabeth, fragrans maxima plena, Lambertiana, La Ville de Saint Denis, Louise Mouchelet, Madame Stuart Low, Osiris, Ranieri, Jules Pirlot, Rinzii, Rosa Mundi, Triomphe de Vandermalin, Vandermaelii, Van Houttei, and Zenobia.
