The Best Tree Peonies.
The following list contains some of the very best varieties of tree Peonies or Moutans at present in cultivation; I obtained it from my friend M. Charles Verdier, of Paris, who makes Peonies his special study; among them, as will be seen, are few novelties, but M. Verdier states that the newer varieties are generally inferior to the older kinds:

The Best Pæonies.
In examining a collection of Herbaceous and Tree Pæonies lately, we have decided that (although all are ornamental) there are in reality but a few worthy of cultivation. Of these the following is a list:
Tree Pæonies: Bijou de Chusan, Carolina, Colonel Malcolm, Comte de Flandres, Donckelaarii, Elizabeth, fragrans maxima plena, Lambertiana, La Ville de Saint Denis, Louise Mouchelet, Madame Stuart Low, Osiris, Ranieri, Jules Pirlot, Rinzii, Rosa Mundi, Triomphe de Vandermalin, Vandermaelii, Van Houttei, and Zenobia.
