Jackson & Perkins owned the American rights to this variety at a time when 'Olympiad' was brand new, and no one was paying any attention to any other red hybrid tea. So they sold it off to a University of Southern California alumnae association. That group named the rose in honor of their school's success at athletics and marketed it for one year as a fund-raising project... a tall plant that produces glowing red blooms on long stems...
