Arvid`s garden, Lista, Norway the 14th of august 2010. The photo shows part of my garden as seen from under stems of "Gerbe Rose", for the moment without flowers. The clematis to the right is "Etoile Violette". The ground cover rose at the bottom is "Viking". The clematis in the background is "Negritjanka", above which are seen flowers of "Tradition" and Burghausen and a single flower of "Emelie". Those of you who would expect to see "Alberic Barbier" accompanying "Etoile Violette" will be just as disappointed as I am. It froze down to almost nothing last winter, only slowly coming back. I keep my fingers crossed. Just to be sure, I planted another one next to it. A few flowers of "Westerland" can be seen to the left.

This photo taken in my garden on the 13th of July 2009 shows the large rambler "Felicite et Perpetue "covering most of an archway together with a smaller "Pink Cloud". All the way to the left on the archway is a big "Rosa Multiflora" unfortunately a bit "washed out" by the light. The big red rose up front right is "Burghausen". In the background may be seen a small part of an elder tree planted to fend off the often strong salty northwest winds. When overlooking this part of my garden I dare say it has done an excellent job performing this crucial task.

Southeastern part of my house covered with roses. Photo taken on the 13th of July 2010. Roses seen in photo are : Coral Dawn, Rosenresli, Felicia, Louise Odier, Santana and Sympathie. The problem is to keep my windows free of the roses. Now this is of course a luxury problem which I hope will remain so. Besides, I enjoy watching the roses from the inside as well. I have my dining room here. So what could really be more satisfying than having the roses outside keep us company while enjoying a good meal inside?

.Arvid`s garden, Lista, southwestern coast of Norway. Photo taken on the 7th of July 2008. Even though almost two years have passed since this photo was taken, the top of the aluminium arche is still bare. The reason for this being the strong salty western winds which have a nasty habit of finding their way right on to this arche. The fence is not tall enough to stop them. I had a big wild cherry tree here that helped a lot, but unfortunately it had to be cut down. I have planted a new one and a few elders. Time will show. In the meantime I have given up on some of the roses here and planted a local wild honeysuckle as an "infill". Roses in photo are "Honorine de Brabant (to the left of the arche) with some flowers of the clematis "Mrs Cholmondeley", "Lykkefund" (scrambling up the appletree), "Mme Plantier" (white rose on the arche) with a few flowers of "Etude". "American Pillar" and "Sander`s White Rambler" are covering my gazebo in the background. A bit of "Paul`s Himalayan Musk" may be seen on the archeway top left. The red gable belongs to my neighbour`s garage.

Arvid`s winter garden, Lista. This photo taken on the 7th of January 2010 shows my house and part of my garden on a clear and fosty winter day. Until right before Christmas 2009 I had both roses and clematises flowering in my garden. Then came the north eastern winds along bringing us real winter for the first time in many many years. And snow for Christmas. Christmas 2009 was the ninth White Christmas at Lista in the last 50 years. So it doesn`t happen very often. Now the odd thing is that temperatures have been around 0 and below; mostly below ,down to -11C, ever since. And there seems to be no end to it. This is very unusual at Lista. But most of Europe has been affected. Although we have had an alltime low of -23C here during the war and -18C in"my time", it has never been this protracted before as I can remember. It seldom lasts more than a week or so at the most. I must admit that it has had me a bit worried for my plants. Luckily there is a thick snow cover. Usually there is barefrost here, which would have been a disaster under these circumstances. I hate this, and I hope it will never happen again. Fortunately I`ll be on my way to India come Feb 2nd.
