Narcisse de Salvandy Gallica. Louis-Joseph-Ghislain Parmentier (Enghien, Belgium) 1843.
Book  (Jul 1998)  Page(s) 237-239.  Includes photo(s).

Narcisse de Salvandy Parmentier (Belgium) before 1847. Habit: not as upright as the other Gallicas; prickles and bristles. Foliage: medium green; pointed elliptical leaflets, even lanceolated. Bloom: rarely solitary, more often in clusters of 3 to 4; medium size, double, cupped; rosette at the centre, around a small soft green button eye; tendence to quartering. Colour: cherry-red at the centre, lilac rose on the periphery. Fragrance: moderate....
This variety is dated 1843 in L'Haÿ and in Sangerhausen, but this date does not seem to be confirmed. It was obtained by Louis Parmentier, the celebrated breeder of Enghien (near Brussels). It was dedicated to the Count of Salvandy (1795-1856), French politician, twice Minister of Public Education and member of the Académie française (where he held the speech for the reception of Victor Hugo).
In his beautiful magazine Flore des serres et des jardins de l'Europe, which he published himself, Louis Van Houtte, nurseryman from Ghent, describes 'Narcisse de Salvandy', which he had judged in 1847 before the sale of the roses from the collection of his friend Louis Parmentier, thus: "Vigorous shrub, straight branches, furnished with numerous small straight and brown prickles; foliage with 5 leaflets of beautiful deep green; quite large bloom, with six to eight rows of vivid red petals, edged on the whole circumference by a cream-white band; this band is prolonged to the middle of the petals and often cut in half at the base; beautiful yellow stamens, visible at the centre; ovary?"
At the time of the sale of 1847, only two specimens of this variety were found in the collection of Louis Parmentier. One was sold to the Swiss collector Escher-Zollikofer, the other to Van Houtte: it is from this second specimen that this variety has come to us.
