Sandy Hook is VERY thornless at 1.5' x 1.5' as 11th-year own root in my zone 5. It's drought tolerant and require the least water among my 160 own root roses. The scent is more fruity with my alkaline tap water at pH 9, ranges from grape juice to delicious red wine. With acidic rain at pH 4.5 the scent is more old rose with a touch of fruitiness. This rose makes great cut flowers since the bush is thornless and blooms last 4 days in the vase if cut from buds. Bush is much healthier if watered with my alkaline tap water.

Sandy Hook as 5th-year own-root in hot and dry August: continuous blooming & 100% thornless & delicious scent of red-wine and grape. It's my MOST ENJOYABLE rose among my 110+ own-root varieties. It's drought-tolerant with deep root & blooms well with alkaline tap-water, great scent, and Japanese Beetles don't care for its tightly packed petals. Best bloom beauty & addictive scent.

Sandy Hook is a constant bloomer as 11th-year own root with powerful old rose and red wine scent. I enjoy this rose MORE than my red Austin own-roots such as Munstead Wood, the Dark Lady, the Squire, William Shakespeare 2000, Tess of d'Ubervilles. It's small and compact at 1.5' x 1.5' plus thornless plus drought and heat tolerant (pic. taken in full sun & over 90 F heat). Rabbits eat Munstead Wood instead of thornless Sandy Hook (leaves are more bitter). This rose is best for hot & dry but can be healthy if doused with sulfate of potash in high rain weeks. It roots easily in closed plastic humid bin like Evelyn .. both have vigorous roots for my rock-hard clay.

Sandy Hook in 2016. Yves seedlings, both pink and red, survived many zone 5a winters since 2012. Yves seedlings are best at thorn-free, found only 3 prickles near the ground. The scent on the pink seedling is STRONG baby-powder-fresh, and the scent on the red seedling is floral-grape-juice. No suckers, but vigorous and healthy in alkaline clay.

Bouquet on August 16, 2017. Sandy Hook is dark-red bloom. Comte de Chambord (upper pink), Betty White (beige pink), Evelyn (left light pink).and Golden Celebration (bottom yellow). Sandy hook is the most THORNLESS & heat & drought & cold-tolerant among my 110+ own-root varieties. Strong red-wine and grape scent with alkaline tap water, but more old rose scent with acidic rain.

One of Yves seedling has both pink blooms and red blooms on the same bush. The red blooms are of higher quality. Clean & glossy foliage .. survived zone 5a winters, I don't winter protect. The most thornless rose ever, only found 2 prickles at the bottom of the bush.

Sandy hook blooms after 1 week of dry & hot in mid 80's F. It blooms easily with my hard-well tap-water at pH 9. Picture taken August 16. Blackspot leaves at top of photo belong to Marie Pavie in my clay, which I did not dig deep for drainage and didn't put gypsum in planting hole. But a 2nd Marie Pavie in the pot with gypsum & Tomato-Tone mixed in is 100% healthy.

Sandy Hook bloom became darker red when fertilized with high-iron red-lava-rocks. In 2012, I got Sandy Hook's seeds from Robert Neil Rippetoe, that's when my ex-neighbor moved to Sandy Hook, CT. Her 6-year-old daughter got shot along with many 1st-graders. I grieve for that little girl. The girl's older brother was my daughter's playmate. Scent is delicious grape juice and baby powder, very much like a sweet toddler's scent.
