Book (1935) Page(s) 18. Harry H. Hazlewood. The New Roses of 1935. In one respect, Vanguard (Stevens, 1932) should be placed first and not last on the list. It is a definite effort to infuse the foliage quality of Rosa rugosa into the weak Pernetiana family, and while it has not achieved all the results in one try, it is progress along sound lines. The growth is tall and almost climbing, while the foliage is a joy to behold. The young plants only bloomed in the spring, but future generations should give us better foliage and more vigorous constitution in the Pernetiana colours.
Website/Catalog (1935) Page(s) 43. New Roses 1935. Vanguard (H. Rug. G. A. Stevens 1932) A new colour in Rugosas. Orange-salmon and gold. Vigorous grower, with large, glossy foliage. Splendid as specimen bush, in the border, as a climber on a fence, or for tall hedge. 4/- each. A very interesting variety for hybridists as it offers possibility of giving back constitution. A cross between Rugosa and Pernetiana.
