Stephen Scanniello, former Curator of the Brooklyn Botanic Garden's Cranford Rose Garden, writes about Pierre-Joseph Redoute, court painter to Empress Josephine Bonaparte at Malmaison. After her death, Redoute published more than 160 of her roses in three volumes from 1817 to 1824.
Scanniello describes a number of Josephine's roses that are still available commercially. The article is illustrated with prints from Redoute. The roses are: Rosa centifolia, R. eglanteria, R. moschata flore semi-plena, R. gallica officinalis, R. multiflora platyphylla, R. indica, and R. damascena variegata.
