There is an old rose that goes by the name of Agrippina, the China rose introduced to England in 1789, but which may be Cramoisi Supérieur, a variety of somewhat later date, which is found in many of California's old garden, often growing as a hedge. From early spring to winter it bears continuously its compact, cup-form double flowers of deep crimson, several to a stalk, and it seems very resistant to the usual pests.

Here was a rose I had thought to be extinct, although later I found it in the lists of one foreign grower of old roses. ...A free grower, it has all the habits of the good Teas and bears abundantly and without interruption throughout the long season its fawn-apricot, fragrant flowers that open from long, shapely buds...

The white Lamarque is one of the first and best of these, introduced over a century ago; it is a rank grower with good clean foliage and a profuse and continuous bloomer, demanding no attention.

My wife and I are just back from a two-weeks' search for the old roses in the California Mother Lode country.
.... we were led to the abandoned site of the former home, destroyed decades ago by fire...... and trailing through the thick carpet of pine needles that covered the ground, a pink trailing rose with double blooms about the size of a quarter, and with sinuous branches twenty feet long. All these roses had been growing here more than seventy-five years ago, had been left to themselves for many generations, and yet they freely, boldly, cheerfully bloom every year!

Mme. Lombard, a large, fully double, fragrant variety of rosy salmon, is one of these Tea roses that typifies the class in behavior and characteristics....Although largely forgotten, since it is seldom offered commercially today, it is encountered over and over again in the old gardens of the Pacific coast where neglected specimens more than fifty years old may be seen in bloom almost any day in the year.

Many other old Tea roses, both in bush and climbing form, are to be found in these old gardens [of the Pacific Coast in California]...., and in southern gardens Maréchal Niel, which grows so much better there than in the West--all of them perfectly at home and quite happy under conditions that would not be endured by many a Hybrid Tea rose....Maréchal Niel, that old favorite whose fragrance has no equal, seems definitely a rose for the South; along the Gulf coast it grows with even greater luxuriance than in English greenhouses.
