This historical study, written by two authors, is the result of four years of research.
It first presents, seen from the inside from the Sarthe and Le Mans area, the French Rosomania of the Empire and the Second Bourbon Restoration. Rich in unpublished documents whose scope goes beyond the local area of survey, this investigation sheds new light on this social and cultural phenomenon that had a lasting impact on the 19th century horticulture. Finally, the study pays a warm tribute to Jean-Pierre Vibert (II), a great rosomaniac and breeder of more than 300 varieties of roses, whose distinguished work immerses us in the magic of roses of the past.

This botanical hybrid rose is clearly a descendant of the Rosa × waitziana var. macrantha Rehd.
It will be available at the Loubert's Rose Nursery in few years.

A direct seedling of Rosa x waitziana or a descendant over several generations?

It may be a direct seedling of Rosa × waitziana (naturally hybridized with some gallica?), because this rose was found inside a hedgerow of thujas along a road, some 20 meters distant of the rose-garden of M. Jean-Pierre Vibert, in Allonnes.
This is a chance seedling, perhaps a bird or some rodent brought there a fruit taken from the garden of M. Vibert...

Rose Listing Omission

'Feroxia'

Gallica / Hybrid Tea
'Feroxia' bred in 2020 by Guillaume Epinal (a rose amateur in Le Mans, France).
This a crossing between the gallica 'Plantagenêt' (Vibert II, 2002) and the English rose 'Golden Celebration' (Austin, 1992).
A once blooming, Spring, shrub (100 cm and more), with semi-lustreous dark green leaves, wood canes have large red sickle-shaped prickles.
Cupped flowers are medium in size, double, not completely full, petals have two colors : above dark rose near red cherry in color, under yellow amber. There is a little fruity fragrance.

Hello Jedmar,
my apologies for being so long to reply.
'Feroxia' is a new rose I raised from seed, so there isn't much litterature elsewhere on this variety.

The reason for my question was that HMF mostly bases its listings on published information, even from social media. Is the book "Rosomanes et Rose au Mans" from you?

Yes Jedmar, we (my father and I) are authors of this book. It is a historical study on the French Rosomania from Le Mans. There are plenty of unpublished documents inside, dating from the 1820's decade, and in addition all datas on Jean-Pierre Vibert II works.

Dear Jedmar,
If you are interested to buy a copy, it would be easier indeed to ask me directly.
As an author I have few copies in stock and I can send you one at your postal address.
This price of the book is 25€, and shipping (La Poste prices for zone 1, below 2kg, European Union and Switzerland, books and brochures, would be 4,34€).
So total is estimated about 29,34€
