Registration name: Albéric Barbier (Rambler, Barbier, 1900)

Origin:

Bred by Barbier Frères & Compagnie (France, 1900).
Introduced in Australia by Arthur Yates & Co. Ltd. in 1905 as 'Albéric Barbier'.

Class:

Hybrid Wichurana, Rambler.

Bloom:

Cream, light yellow center, ages to white . Moderate, green apple, tea fragrance. Average diameter 2.5". Medium, semi-double (9-16 petals), borne mostly solitary, in small clusters, globular, quartered bloom form. Spring or summer flush with scattered later bloom. Small buds.

Habit:

Climbing, few or no prickles/thorns. Glossy, bronze-green, holly-like foliage.

Height: 15' to 25' (455 to 760cm). Width: 10' to 12' (305 to 365cm).

Growing:

USDA zone 4b through 9b. Very vigorous. shade tolerant. Disease susceptibility: very disease resistant. Requires spring freeze protection (see glossary - Spring freeze protection) . Can be grown in the ground or in a container (container requires winter protection). Prune after flowering is finished. Remove unproductive wood every third year or so.

Notes:

Albéric Barbier, gardener and father of Albert Barbier, who founded Barbier et Cie.

The original descriptions of 'Albéric Barbier' are for a semi-double, medium size bloom on almost prickless canes. This does not fit with the plant with large, full blooms on prickly canes sold today.

The signature for the rose sold today is the almost evergreen, clean and glossy foliage.
