Alba Roses .... 'Chloris'...Found in various locations in southeastern Sweden ... Description ...According to Pom's Dna study the nearest relative of 'Chloris' is 'Great Maiden's Blush' and 'Småkärrs Inger'. Their similarity index is 60,7%. The next nearest are 'Duchesse de Rohan' in the Portland group, 'Fru Svensson' in the Alba group, 'Törnsfall' in the Gallica group and 'Gunhild' in the Alba group. Their similarity indices are 53,8, 53,3, 50,0 and 48,1% respectively. The similarity index between 'Chloris' and 'Alba Maxima' as well as the other white-bloomed sorts is 45,7%.

‘Chloris’/’Rosée du Matin’ = Alba… grand buisson souple et peu épineux d’environ 2m en tous sens, au feuillage d’un vert très sombre. Très tôt en saison, il s’éclaire de grosses fleurs doubles… foison de pétales réfléchis, arrangés en quartiers autour d’un petit œil en bouton… Avant 1848.

Chloris Suzanne Verrier mentions a white Gallica called 'Chloris' that is attributed to Decemet 1800, and is different then the Alba of the same name. However, in reality, they're probably the same variety. Vibert's, Descemet's successor, wrote that 'Chloris' (or 'Clori') is an Alba hybrid. Later, Gravereaux mistakenly classified this rose as a Gallica in his catalogue of roses that Joséphine grew at Malmaison. This error is responsible for some of the confusion that continues to this day.

[Joyaux lists it with a "?"] Descemet was another great rose grower of the Empire period. His nursery was at St-Denis near Paris. In 1815 his nurseries were destroyed during the war and at that time he had imported or bred more than a hundred Gallicas -- in fact 109 are known. Only 15 of these remain -- this is one of them...
