Vibert, France, 1819.

Daphné. Vibert, 1819. Synonyms: Eugénie (Vibert). Niobé (Vibert). Nouveau triomphe (at Rouen). La monstrueuse (at Lille). Habit: upright shrub (1.20 m height); small prickles, bristles. Foliage: medium green; elliptical leaflets, often 3 to 4 instead of 5 per leaf. Bloom: abundant blooming; solitary or in 2 or 3s; medium, double, flat; some stamens visible. Colour: carmine-pink stained mauve; passing to lilac, mottled violet. Fragrance: very mild. ...Pirolle and Desportes, in 1826 and 1828, state as a synonym "Hybride illustre". It is preferable not to retain this, as Vibert himself, in hs catalogue of 1820, consudered 'Daphne' and 'Hybride illustre' as two different roses. Hadrdy, on the other hand, mentions a whole series of synonyms which are not listed by anyone else....

In the Rosetum Gallicum (1828), Desportes printed a list of all roses known at that period in France. Out of 2562 varieties listed, 1213 are Gallicas. Of these, Desportes gives no information about 332 of them, except their names. Of the rest 316 came from the Low Countries. The remaining 565 were bred by French raisers, of whom two stand head and shoulders above the rest: Vibert (97 varieties) and Miellez (212 varieties). These two bred over half the Gallicas produced during the Restoration. About a dozen of Vibert's Gallicas produced before 1828 are still with us. This is one of them.
