'Dickson's Red' rose References

I was given a 1940 catalogue recently and it was interesting to read of the latest releases of that year with their glowing descriptions. The big news in the rose world of that year were three new varieties, Dr. F.G. Chandler, Rome Glory (described enthusiastically as a red Dame Edith Helen) and Grande Duchesse Charlotte, which between them had won most of the overseas awards during the previous year.

Rose Nomenclature By the Editor As no doubt some of our members are aware, a very unsatisfactory situation with respect to Rose names has arisen within the past few years due to the practice of certain large commercial firms in re-naming Roses of European origin, contrary to and in defiance of "International Rules of Botanical Nomenclature" and its supplementary schedule known as Appendix VII (Nomenclature of Garden Plants).
