A Rose for Laura, by Mikyla Thompson. When two people, no matter how young or old, are drawn together by a common interest it is rare that a friendship isn't created. George Thomson and Laura Chantal Bates of Mount Barker, through their special passion for gardening, flowers and roses, have formed a beautiful life-long friendship. This unique and exceptional friendship has led George, who is a well known and successful rose breeder, to name an exquisite little rose after Laura as a token of their friendship. This beautiful rose ‘Laura Chantal’has a magnificent perfume and flowers in five different shades of pink. Nine year old Laura is currently under going treatment for cancer at the Women's and Children's Hospital in Adelaide, and once ‘Laura Chantal’ is released the profits from the roses that are purchased will be given to the Childhood Cancer Association Inc. George is the resident gardener for the impressive private property "The Laurels" in Mount Barker. It was originally owned and built by flour mill entrepreneur John Dunn in 1863. In his own private section of the garden, George has created the most extraordinary rose garden with hundreds of different varieties making it truly spectacular. Even rose expert David Austin was so impressed, when visiting, that he used up a whole roll of film! There are roses growing up gum trees, growing out of chimneys, and climbing tanks. It is amazing. I can understand why Laura would be drawn to venture up the road from where she lived to see all the beautiful flowers. George said that for seven years Laura has been visiting his enchanting garden. "She just loves gardening, especially flowers," he said. "She will often watch over my shoulder when I am working in the garden to see exactly what I am doing. Gardens fascinate her". "I named the rose after Laura because she is such a special little girl and she has shown such a love for roses ever since I have known her". Laura said she felt very lucky to have a rose named after her. "I think I like the idea so much because the roses will keep on flowering forever," she said. "They are very pretty, and it is good to know that other people will grow them in their garden and look at them and say 'aren't they beautiful' . "My rose smells really nice, so that's also good. But I love all flowers because when you look at them they are colourful and bright and they cheer you up!". ‘Laura Chantal’ is part of a special series of patio roses that George has been breeding for a year 2000 collection called "Boulevard of Dreams". Five roses will make up the patio rose collection and will also include the rose ‘Drumbeat’ and ‘Dream Boulevard’. George has said that the ‘Laura Chantal’ is perfect for planting in a pot and will flower freely in a sunny position. The ‘Laura Chantal’ is also an ideal rose for children because of its confection of pinks, fruity perfume, matt foliage, very few thorns and it only grows to approximately 2ft. 6ins.," he said. "Like the little girl it is named after it is a real little girl's rose, just right for posies and potpourri". George has won many awards for his roses and believes that ‘Laura Chantal’ is a beautiful rose that many gardeners will fall in love with..... (Courtesy of the Adelaide Hills Weekender.)
