Discovered by Père Jean Marie Delavay (France, circa 1890). Discovered by E.H. Wilson (United Kingdom, 1900).
Introduced in France by Vilmorin-Andrieux in circa 1890 as 'Rosa sericea L. f. pteracantha Franch.'.
Introduced in United Kingdom by Veitch - Coombe Wood Nursery in circa 1900 as 'Rosa sericea L. f. pteracantha Franch.'.

Species / Wild.  

White.  Mild, linseed oil, sweet fragrance.  4 to 5 petals.  Small, single (4-8 petals) bloom form.  Once-blooming spring or summer.  

Armed with thorns / prickles, bushy, spreading, well-branched.  Small, semi-glossy, dark green foliage.  7 to 11 leaflets.  

Height: 6' to 12' (185 to 365cm).  

USDA zone 6b and warmer.  Can be used for specimen.  Vigorous.  produces decorative hips.  Needs little care; relatively disease-free and quite hardy.  Prune dead wood.

Rosa sericea and Rosa omeiensis both have a form 'Pteracantha' with broad, flat, winglike prickles. Rosa sericea should be a shorter plant with commonly fewer leaflets, 7-11, althought it can have up to 13 and as few as 5.
