'Gottfried Keller' rose References

In 1897 Stephan Olbrich [from the nursery Otto Froebel] discovered in Weingarten [where Dr. Müller lived] beside otherm, interesting novelties, a cross of 'Persian Yellow' by Dr. H. Müller. As this hybrid lutea was difficult to propagate, it was offered only in 1902 as 'Gottfried Keller', and later distributed by Froebel, from Zürich. The colour combination of 'Gottfried Keller' is similar to that of 'Soleil d'Or'. The rose is however less double and repeats. Unfortunately the fame of 'Soleil d'Or' was already so great, that the work of Dr. Hermann Müller was soon forgotten.

Gottfried Keller Pernetiana. Müller, 1894. From an unnamed seedling (which resulted from a cross of 'Mme. Bérard' [Noisette] x 'Persian Yellow' [Foetida]) x an unnamed seedling (which resulted from a cross of an unnamed seedling [itslef resulting from a cross of 'Pierre Notting' (Hybrid Perpetual) and 'Mme. Bérard'] and 'Persian Yellow'). The author cites information from different sources... Bicolored blossom, varying from orange yellow to coppery pink... Possibly not commercially introduced until 1904.

[The influence of R. foetida] is also the case with 'Gottfried Keller', where the anthocyanides consist of almost pure cyanine and the carotenoids are well-represented with approx. 50 mg%. Epoxydes are 55% thereof. This time unexpected high amounts of Zeaxanthine (24%) are contained. It is the biological pre-stage of Violaxanthine.

Austrian Briars and their Hybrids.
Pruning. — These require little or no pruning. Simply remove any dead and useless wood.
Gottfried Keller... Dr. Muller, 1902, vigorous. Apricot with golden-yellow centre; semi-double, beautiful.

...an addition was made to the class in 1904 which attracted the attention of rosarians, and that was a Hybrid Austrian called Gottfried Keller, a single Rose of uncommon and very attractive colour, rich yellow, with a strong suffusion of terra-cotta. It is hardly vigorous enough for a high pillar or wall, but may be grown in a bed.
Book  (1914)  Page(s) 191.

The colour of Gottfried Keller is something that we shall find hard to match, perhaps to describe. An almost unique Rose, this singular, striking German, with the blood of the Austrian Brier in its veins. One might say that there is a piece of the coat of the Austrian Copper superimposed on the primrose racing jacket of the Roseberys. The flowers are all but single, yet not perfectly so. It is a Rose for the bed or the border, not for the pillar or arch. It has the great merit-unusual among single Roses-of being perpetual, and one may see flowers at the end of September.
