Sheenagh Harris, Roses in South Africa
Another amateur was Signor Moro, who was a prisoner of war in S.A. and he bred a rose named 'Pretoria' which won a gold medal in Rome in 1953. A mutation of this variety was found at Floradale Nursery in East London, S A, one of the first striped hybrid teas and it became well known as Anvil Sparks and as 'Ambossfunken' (a translation of Anvil Sparks) by Kordes.

Anvil Sparks HT. (Meyer, 1963) A sport of 'Signora Piero Puricelli', and it resembles the parent in all but colour. A spectacular rose - the petals are mostly deep chrome yellow, but they are heavily striped and splashed with rich scarlet. Seldom up to show standard, and only moderately fragrant.

New Roses.  Anvil Sparks HT. (E. Meyer) A sport said to be from 'Signora P. Puricelli'. It was very attractive in the spring but degenerated in the autumn. The colour is most striking, being rich yellow striped coppery red. All blooms are striped and all petals in the bloom have the two colours striped down them. Most probably will suit the drier areas, but a word of caution is given to those coastal growers on the Eastern coast of this continent.
