Origin:
Bred by Louis-Joseph-Ghislain Parmentier (Belgium, before 1842).
Class:
Found Rose, Gallica / Provins.  
Bloom:
Carmine-red, violet shading, white undertones. [Mauve - purple.].  Smooth pedicel. Red tint to glandular stipule and one side of pedicel. Corrugated foliage. Usually clusters of 3’s.  Mild fragrance.  Medium, full (26-40 petals), in small clusters, button-eye, quartered bloom form.  Once-blooming spring or summer.  Rounded buds.  
Habit:
Few or no prickles/thorns.  Matte, light green, fringed stipules, wrinkled (rugose) foliage.  

Height: 4' to 6½' (120 to 200cm).  Width: 4' to 8' (120 to 245cm).
Growing:
USDA zone 4b through 8b.  Remove old canes and dead or diseased wood..  Prune after flowering is finished.

Possibly some confusion with the bourbon 'Hippolyte Jamain' by Pradel. 'Hippolyte (Jamain)' as sold by Loubert is prickly and has strong fragrance.


Mike Lowe of Lowe's Roses describes the flowers of this rose as deep, velvety violet, some white in the center, button-eyed, medium, double and quartered...


The Swedish Rose Society recommends Hippolyte for northern Sweden.
