Hayden Foulds. Rose Breeding in New Zealand. ....One of our leading rosarians in New Zealand is Doug Grant of Pukekohe.... Doug's first rose to be commercially sold was 'Millenium' (GRAlove) named to co-incide with the millennium celebrations of 2000. Bred from 'Molly McGredy' x 'Satchmo', it is a floribunda with well-formed clusters of scarlet blooms. It was a Silver Star / Certificate of Merit winner at Palmerston North in 1997 and won the award for best floribunda and best overall at the inaugural New Zealand Rose of the Year in Hamilton in 2001.

p82. Dawn Eagle. Sea of Roses, Timaru. The Champion of Champions, a large stem of 'Millenium' exhibited by Michael and Marian Brown, was one of these. I believe that the judges pointed it at over 90, which is very unusual for an autumn show. It was a pity that it was displayed on such a high table that most people couldn't admire it easily.

'Millennium'. (GRAlove) Grant 1999. (Syn 'Everlasting Love') Garden rating 7.6. Exhibition rating 7.7. 26 bushes, 14 reports. Some health problems. Light fragrance. Medium height. Southland - my first plant had petal fleck virus and was dug out, second plant bright, clear colour, blooms last well but would like more basals. Northland slow to get started but now make great bushes and a good show of blooms in bright scarlet. Had some good large stems and makes a great show in the garden. Otago has a new bush and is very impressed with the quality and clarity of colour. North Otago says bright scarlet blooms, large and small stems for showing. Lower Hutt - good red colour, standard has done well this year despite being in drier spot, mild rust this year. Has good small stems. Four Waikato reporters and all agree on the bright red colour, good garden display and great stems for showing. Two say downy mildew can bother it. BOP bushes slow to get going but once away grow very well, has not quite got what it takes to be one of the greats. Manawatu calls it a fine all round rose with good flower production of bright crimson blooms. I was privileged to see Michael and Marian Brown's large stem of this rose at Timaru. It was as near to perfection as you could get pointed at 97, and it was great to see this rose on display at the Canterbury Rose Society Table Show the following Tuesday night still looking as good. Well done Michael and Marian.

'Millennium' (GRAlove) Grant 1999. (Syn 'Everlasting Love') Garden rating 7.7, Exhibition rating 7.8. 44 bushes, 15 reports. Some health problems. No fragrance. Medium height. Bright scarlet flowers. Manawatu - new bush with scarlet blooms. Large and small stems. Looks very promising. Northland - can take spider mites. Always in flower. Waikato - this is going to be a winner in the garden and showbench. Produces well balanced stems both large and small. Another Waikato grower - prolific flowerer, attracts attention in the garden. Does well on show bench if it can be kept dry, otherwise tendency for blooms to blacken. Paeroa - one of those damn roses that produce lots of new growth, and dieback takes over half of it. Will give it one more year. If no improvement will provide it with a good sendoff. Canterbury - well worth growing. Te Awamutu - vibrant colour, looks good in the garden. North Otago - bush took a year or two to get going but looking good now. Good health, plenty of blooms, a different red to others. Small and large stems for exhibiting and a good vase. Franklin is still impressed with his rose.

'Millennium' (GRAlove) Grant 1999: (Syn 'Everlasting Love') Garden rating 7.7, Exhibition rating 7.9: 52 bushes, 18 reports. Disease resistant: No fragrance: Medium height: Bright scarlet flowers. Manawatu - slow to get started but picks up in second year. Excellent garden and show rose; better for small stems than large. Waikato - good glowing red; some black spot. Not a large growing bush; slow repeat. Also from Waikato - a great rose for the exhibitor; large and small stems; good clean clear colour. A must have rose. Feilding is very disappointed in this rose; may try it in a different place. Northland - spider mites just love this rose. Can get small and large stems for exhibiting. Marlborough - excellent rose in all respects; unfading red.Otago says garden centre not stocking 'Millennium' any more, should call it 'Everlasting Love'. Lovely rose which stands rain and bad weather better than most. Nelson had a bush with petal fleck and has dug it out but will plant another one. Waikato - great garden rose with plenty of stems for exhibiting. Feilding says this is the best new rose for years; does everything right. He should know - he bred the rose!

p37. Doug Grant. Five Favourite Roses. 'Everlasting Love' ('Molly McGredy' x 'Satchmo'). Doug Grant, 1998. New Zealand Rose of the Year 2001. 'Everlasting Love' first took my eye back in about 1990. Its bright scarlet-red flowers are something different to the standard red floribundas. As the years have passed by this rose has matured with age. It continues to impress me with its plant health, colour and long vase life. As a bonus it is ideal for the show bench for both large and small stem classes.
