'William Harvey' rose References
Book (2007) Page(s) 567. William Harvey, HT, mr, 1948, [Crimson Glory x Southport], Norman ... description
Book (1978) Page(s) 97. In a tiny home greenhouse, Albert Norman put his mind to breeding roses: the first question he would ask was what colour? To which the answer was red. The next, what parents? He took the best dark red variety to seed and the best bright red colour to pollen, which gave him a cross of 'Crimson Glory' x 'Southport'. Often this is shown in reverse order in the books, but my information was checked carefully with Albert Norman. I never discovered how many seedpods he had of the cross but I suspect from something he said it was only one. It yielded 'Ena Harkness', 'Red Ensign' and 'William Harvey', and thus an amateur gave a classic but deceptive example of how easy rose breeding might appear.
Book (1958) Page(s) 428. William Harvey. HT. (Norman; int. Harkness, '48.) Crimson Glory X Southport. Large (4-6 in.), dbl., high centered, very fragrant, scarlet. Vig., bushy; free bloom.
Book (1953) Page(s) 35. S. J. Bisdee. Red Roses in Tasmania. William Harvey ...is just on the point of opening and looks deeper in colour than Ena Harkness.
Book (1952) Page(s) 55. Dr. A. S. Thomas. Red Roses. William Harvey, Red Ensign and Ena Harkness are alleged to have all come from the same seed-pod, and be the result of crossing Crimson Glory and Southport. William Harvey flowers extraordinarily freely, but it is not a first-class garden rose as it often hangs its head. The blooms will frequently be exhibited as specimens, having great qualities in colour, form, size and length of petal.... These three roses are "musts" in my garden. ‘William Orr’ ...The petals are not as long nor the bloom as sharply pointed as William Harvey
Magazine (Feb 1950) Page(s) 1. trimester, p. 13.
Book (1950) p12. Harry H. Hazlewood. The New Roses of 1950. William Harvey HT. (Norman, 1948) In previous years Mr. Norman has given us such splendid roses as 'Ena Harkness' and 'Red Ensign' from 'Crimson Glory' x 'Southport' parentage. 'William Harvey' comes from the same cross. The blooms are large, double, high centred and richly fragrant and are full of promise for garden and exhibition.
p139. Mr. And Mrs. C. A. Homan. The New Roses in Queensland William Harvey. We have had some splendid blooms from this rose. They are of excellent shape with a high pointed centre and possess a lovely rich scarlet red colour. Nevertheless a few more petals would greatly improve it for Queensland. The flowers open all too quickly in the warm weather. The growth is vigorous and blooms are produced in good quantities.
p144. Dr. A. S. Thomas. A Victorian Summary. William Harvey – the colour is a little darker than 'Malar Ros' and the petals are less numerous, though the flower is as big.
