'Birthday Present'. Modern. Large-flowered climber, dark red. Repeat-flowering. Douglas Toogood of Melbourne found this seeding in his seedling patch on his birthday – hence the name. ‘Birthday Present’ is a vigorous climber producing an abundance of very dark red, highly scented double blooms composed of 20 or more petals on a 13 ft (4m) high plant. Repeat bloom will occur in some seasons but not in others. It is one of the best of the Australian-raised climbing red roses and has dark, leathery foliage and excellent disease resistance. It is a good rose for a wall, pillar or tripod and is even strong enough for an archway. Zones 5-9. Toogood, Australia, 1950. ‘Guinee’ x ‘Rouge Mallerin’.

Stan Polley, Connewarne, Vic. I am a member of the Heritage Rose Society, and I get your journal. Years ago I used to grow climbing roses. They were 'Peace', 'Mrs. Herbert Stevens', and 'Birthday Present'. This one was propagated by Mr. Toogood and it was a brownish-red colour. It has gone out now.
