Editor: what is the most touching story behind the naming of any rose?
Sam McGredy: Seven years ago I had a letter from a man who said his wife was dying. She was passionately fond of roses. Could I name a new one after her. Usually I stipulate a $5,000 fee for this privilege. In this case I was delighted to waive it and name a new rose 'Beatrice in memory of her.
