'Palo Alto' rose Reviews & Comments
-
-
Conard & Jones 1898 Palo Alto—This is a splendid new rose from California. It is large, full, and very sweet; the color is lovely chamois rose, delicately tinged at the centre with golden-yellow and creamy white. The bush is a strong and healthy grower, and constant and abundant bloomer; it is a rose sure to please and give satisfaction in every way; bears beautiful large sweet roses all through the season.

(Could this be Burbank's 'Coquito', renamed by the introducer?) Whether or not this is one of Burbank's, it is clear that 'Palo Alto' was introduced by Sunset in 1895, rather than by Conard & Jones in 1898. Even C&J admitted it was a California rose.
Sunset Seed & Plant Co. (Sherwood Hall Nursery Co.) 1895, p. 79
Palo Alto
This grand new rose we have grown for the past two seasons in our trial grounds, and find it to be a rose of great merit, producing enormous quantities of fine blooms throughout the entire season, from early spring to December, in the open ground. Color, rose suffused with carmine; buds long, pointed and very full; beautifully glossy foliage, never affected with mildew; a vigorous grower. Price, 3-inch pots, 50c. each.
Mr. Luther Burbank, the eminent horticultural specialist, pronounces Palo Alto the finest rose and freest bloomer he has ever seen.
