'Souvenir du Président Lincoln' rose Reviews & Comments
-

I planted my Souvenir du President Lincoln last Fall (2021), own root, Zone 7b, US. This spring, it grew slowly; but in the summer (now), the plant has new shoots; leaves are healthy, and growing. However, no buds. I would like to ask if it is normal that this type of rose does not have bud in the first year. How long should I wait for buds and blooms? Thank you

I bought two bands of own-root SdPL from Burling in the fall of 2020, and actually had several blooms before the year was out. Next summer, I found that the plant I had in a somewhat shady area (ca. 40% shade) spent a lot of energy just throwing up 6 - 8 ft. blind canes, and had fewer blooms. This spring I moved it to a full sun position, and it is really thriving. No blind canes, much more compact and bushy, and covered in blooms through its first and second flush so far, and a third is just few weeks away. You might re-assess your position, if not in full sun.
I’m right at the 6a/b line.

Where is planted the rose does not have morning sun, but starting around 10:00 am it has its sun to 18:00. It is very sunny. The tallest cane is about 3 feet; lush with leaves. No flowers.
From your picture, it looks like it is a climber. I also bought it from Heirloom; it says the height is 6ft; but I would not think it is climber.

Thanks for becoming a premium member! Oh, believe me, it WILL climb, given the chance. Here is a bloom picture of the other SdPL, planted near a beech tree, and doing its best to climb to the top…

Ok. Now, I will need to prepare for Monsieur Lincoln a place to climb. :-) and if he blooms. Haha.

Growing in central Texas USA. Beautifully formed, very fragrant flowers in good quantity over a long period. Wants to grow long arching canes, and I suspect it would be wonderful if you have the room to let it do its own thing. I just cannot put up with the black spot any more - impossible to keep it in check on this plant in this environment. Finally pulled it out today. Sad

HCR website states that SDPL is hardy to zone 5, and the gardens tab shows the rose growing in several USDA zone 5b gardens, and even one grower in Lithuania, has it in zone 4b.

The books I have and the descriptions of this rose say/show crimson to purple, whereas the photos here are more "hybrid perpetual pink."
Are there mis-named clones being sold as this rose out there?

Michael...I just bought this rose in August at Heirloom and there was one bloom open on the plant. It was definitely red...bright crimson red....it is now in Marin county, California and has yet to throw another bud but I am hoping that it is red and not hot pink like all these other photos show.

Vintage listed this in their last years commenting that in Greg's opinion it wasn't the real thing. I think Rogue was the first to sell it.

From Vintage Gardens Book of Roses, 2006 edition, p.48
(Souvenir du President Lincoln) "Large, broad lilac-rose blooms of intense coloring and excellent fragrance; we fear this cannot be the rose originally sold under this name, a rose that honored Abraham Lincoln, a rose that should be deep crimson shaded blackish red."
Vintage gave their source as Schultheis.

I have added that reference and put a note on the main page.
