Origin:
Bred by Unknown (before 1790). Bred by Jacques-Louis Descemet (France, before 1815).
Class:
Centifolia, Gallica / Provins.  
Bloom:
Mauve or purple blend.  Strong fragrance.  Average diameter 2".  Large, very double, flat, rosette bloom form.  Once-blooming spring or summer.  
Habit:

Height: 39" to 5'11" (100 to 180cm).  Width: up to 3' (up to 90cm).
Growing:
USDA zone 4b through 9b.  Drought resistant.  shade tolerant.  Remove old canes and dead or diseased wood..  Prune after flowering is finished.

Patent status unknown (to HelpMeFind).

Notes:
Some sources list it as a Centifolia, some as a Gallica. (See References). Probably a number of different, but similar roses. 'Pourpre belle violette' and 'Manteau pourpre' were similar, but less full roses.
