'White Simplicity ®' rose Reviews & Comments

I am considering growing this rose and a friend who lives 500 miles away has it, and would like to give me cuttings . . . Is this one of those roses that can be grown from a cutting?? I was able to do this with "Betty Prior" and the cutting took quite well. ---Thanks for any advice. |

While it's possible to root White Simplicity, it's illegal. Jackson & Perkins patented the rose, so they own exclusive rights to produce plants of it. You can pretty much be assured that any rose a major introducer releases is patented. Patents run for 21 years after the patent date. Since this rose was introduced in 1999, you'll have to wait until 2020 to root it legally. It's up to you to determine if you wish to abide by the legality of the patent. Being a breeder, I do respect a patent holder's rights. It's difficult enough to pay for my "hobby". I can only imagine the costs involved in creating, testing and bringing to market a new rose for a large company! |

According to the US Patent Office http://www.uspto.gov/web/offices/pac/plant/ , the duration of a plant patent is 20 years from DATE OF APPLICATION which in this case is 10 AUG 1987. So the patent is expired.
Not sure if this is the rose I would plant, though, even if I could get it for free.

WHITE SIMPLICITY is still blooming as of 11-24-08 in Silicon Valley, although the bush itself is only about 24" high, outside SummerWinds Nursery in Mtn. View, CA.
