That this is a seedling of 'John Hopper' is only speculation.

The reference from periodical The Garden reads: "This Rose so much resembles John Hopper in its growth that one can imagine it to be a seedling of that famous old sort" (The Garden, August 10, 1907, p. 381).

For its part, periodical Gardening Illustrated also only guesses: "Rev. Alan Cheales, doubtless a seedling from John Hopper" (January 6, 1901, p. 592).
