Fleur(s) de Pelletier Pelletier, before 1824. Synonyms: Agathe de Pelletier (Hardy, ca. 1852-1860), Léandre (Calvert, 1829), Pelletier (Prévost, 1824; Vibert, 1845). Rose de Pelletier (Vibert, 1831).
Habit: 1,60 m high, 2 m wide, strong shrub; few prickles, only a few very fine bristles. Foliage: light, small pointed leaflets. Colour: carmine pink centre, light lilac on the periphery. Fragrance: strong....
This variety is from Pelletier, rose breeder at Barrière de Clichy, in Paris. One finds it already 1824 in the catalogue pf Prévost of Rouen, with the following description. "Very floriferous shrub. Early blooms, medium size, full, regular, pale pink."
According to Prévost this variety was called "the noble flower" by Vibert. However, "La noble fleur" was an introduction by Descemet, presented as such by Vibert, his successor. It is today extinct. More probably, 'Fleur de Pelletier' corresponds in the catalogues of Vibert to 'Rose Pelletier' (1831, 1836), then 'Pelletier' very shortly (1845), where it is "pale lilac" and classed as an "uncertain hybrid".
The contradiction of the sources as to the colour of this variety is troubling. Prévost says "pale pink", Vibert "pale lilac", and, in his personal example of the catalogue of L'Haÿ for 1902, Gravereaux noted "slaty cherry".
