Etoile de Hollande (HT. Verschuren 1919). 'General MacArthur' x 'Hadley'. Horace McFarland in Roses of the World in Colour. 1937 wrote "If there were to be but one red rose admitted into the small garden, it might easily be 'Etoile de Hollande', which, both fragrant and fine endures many things and always does itself credit. It's almost thornless plant seems to prefer half shade. All new red roses are compared with this, the standard of excellence. I absolutely have to have 'Etoile de Hollande'. I don't remember how we came about it, but it must certainly be as early as the late 1960's. It is still my favourite red rose. I don't care if it grows into a leggy bush; there is just something very pure about the whole arrangement. To me, it looks like the great plant maker created it along with the species Roses. Its flowers and its perfume are what make it so very worthwhile. The fact that it was born the same year as my mother and came from Holland has nothing to do with it; of course!
