Beales, UK, 1981.

1981 was the Centenary year of the legendary ballerina Anna Pavlova. Though she travelled the world constantly, she always returned with a sense of expectancy to her large London garden, where she took the keenest interest in all growing things. One of her solo dances was called “La Rose Mourante”, but she seems to have faded in vain, since no Rose horticulturalist thought to name a bloom after her. We were happy to repair the omission. The new Rose was noticed in our trial beds by Keith Money, whose biography of Pavlova has received world wide acclaim as the definitive account of her life. He says of his choice: “There is a real period of charm about the full, slightly frilled petals with their hearts shades of face-powder pink, all set off with the darkest possible leaves, strangely circular. The scent of this rose sets it apart – I cannot think of another rose like it. It is quite haunting; the nearest I can get to Describing it would be to imagine a picnic of fresh fruit salad, topped with Turkish Delight, and served under a flowering May tree! “.
