Very nice variety - even though it is a once blooming variety. Sad to see no descendants (at this time) because it is worthy of carrying forward its genes in my opinion. Therefore, I did do a few controlled crosses with it in 2018.

It is reluctant, but it will set a few hips in controlled crosses. Next step is to see if any of the seeds inside will germinate. Because of its very double nature, very little pollen can be collected. Hopefully what pollen is collected can is fertile.

I cannot understand why this Hybrid Wichurana isn't grown more often. Yes, it blooms only once in the spring. But the blooms are larger, fuller and more long-lasting than any of the poseurs being sold as Paul Transon. I find the plant more floriferous, too. It is viciously thorny, not fun to handle, but in my opinion, it has been sadly neglected. It produces many blooming laterals with clusters of bloom that open in any weather. I would never grow it as a ground cover, as the prickles are really intimidating and stiff, and it would be impossible to maintain.
