Quite a few exciting discoveries have been made in the search for Alister Clark’s roses. We now think we have Janet Morrison........ A phone call ....from Robert Peace. Robert had seen amongst other old roses a nice red rose with the decorative style of many of the Alister Clark creations. This was at an old property near Yea called Cannon Vale. So off to Yea I went returning home with about ten budsticks of old roses, amongst them the Alister Clark suspect. This rose opened its first flowers for me a few weeks ago and I believe it is Janet Morrison, 1936, Alister Clark’s own seedling from Black Boy. In the nursery row the (to me) familiar growth habit of Black Boy is present in this rose, though the flowers are quite distinct from Black Boy. I don’t think Janet Morrison was ever a very popular rose, but it is certainly worth its garden space as it is quite a good doer.

Janet Morrison – 1936. Blackboy x seedling. Large Flowered Climbing rose. Double, fragrant, deep pink cupped flowers on long stems, fully recurrent. Dark green, leathery foliage. Flower: 35 petals, 90 mm, 3 to 9. Climber: 4m x 3m.
