Introduced in France by André Schwartz in 1901 as 'Princesse Marie Mertchersky'.
Introduced in Australia by Anderson and Co. in 1908 as 'Princesse Marie Mertchersky'.

Class:

Hybrid Tea.

Bloom:

Pink, carmine-pink shading. Large, double (17-25 petals) bloom form. Blooms in flushes throughout the season.

Growing:

USDA zone 7b and warmer. Spring Pruning: Remove old canes and dead or diseased wood and cut back canes that cross. In warmer climates, cut back the remaining canes by about one-third. In colder areas, you'll probably find you'll have to prune a little more than that. Requires spring freeze protection (see glossary - Spring freeze protection) .

Notes:

Russian nobility, claiming descent from the Volga-Finn Meshchera tribe who lived between the Oka and Klyazma rivers. The Mestchersky family is of Tatar origin and descends from Hussein Sherinsky, who was the Prince of Meshera (a region near Moscow between the rivers of Oka and Klyazma) in the 15th century. After the Russian revolution family members were in exile in Western Europe and had a villa in Nice.
"Marie" Mestchersky is probably Princess Maria Nicolaevna Meschcherskaya (April 10, 1866 St. Petersburg - October 30, 1948 Asnières)
