My mother is Betty Stielow of Portland, Oregon. My mother’s father, Mr. Fred C. Stielow of Niles Center, Illinois, was a wholesale grower of roses back in the 1920’s and 1920’s in the Chicago area. Years ago, my mother passed along some notes she had apparently taken from a book entitled Modern Roses 6 published I believe by the McFarland Co. in 1965. Her notes read as follows:
“Roses Hybridized by Stielow Brothers 1928:
Betty Stielow: Hybrid Tea Premier sport
Double, fragrant, dark pink, almost red at times
Hybridized by F.C. Stielow 1937:
White Finch, Polyantha; Mrs. R.M. Finch sport
White, tinted pink, Plant patent 277 (expired) w.
Red Finch, Polyantha (F.C. Stielow, 1937); Mrs. R.M. Finch sport
More cupped, more open, more double than parent, cerise, cluster, profuse bloom. Plant patent 292 (expired).”
The notes also showed a “Betty Stielow, Perfection and Perfection, hybrid tea (Stielow Bros.) 1925 Pink sport of Columbia”.
With my mother aging, I am interested in finding out whether any of these roses still exist and, if so, where I might be able to view/purchase them. Any help you could give me would be much appreciated. Thank you.
My name is Bill Schweinfurth and you can reach me at (503) 292-6903.
