I believe Heirloom roses never looked at all those climbing Austin originated roses (so-called English roses), for there are a lot of climbing roses, that can be kept/trained as a shrub.
So that phrase of Heirloom Roses can be redirected to "The Country of Fairytales"

This is a most remarkable rose. I have grown the climber for almost 2 years and it is one of my favorites. It is extremely well suited for our mild coastal climate. Color and form are outstanding. The plant is quite vigorous and can be grown as a climber or pillar. Resistance to mildew and rust is outstanding. I cannot speak for blackspot. Newly opened blooms convey a quality of freshness rarely matched in rosedom. With regards to remontancy (repeat blooms), the spring bloom is spectacular. In our climate we get a couple of decent summer bloom cycles. The fall cycle is dismal with only a sporadic bloom on a huge plant. One of the unique quality is the straightness of the stems. I have never seen a rose with such straight stems, a real advantage for the exhibitor. The fragrance is delightful blend of myrrh and fruitiness. Thrips, both chili and western flower, seem to avoid this rose. One of the great joys of growing roses is to come upon a real treasure from a small volume hybridizer.

How is this rose for cold hardiness? I'm in zone 4b/5a and had great luck with it's two parents Graham Thomas and Distant Drums so am leaning towards trying it however the cold hardy ratings by 3 other voters only show good and not excellent so I'm looking for some input before purchasing from some 4 and 5 zoners--thanks.

The Impressionist is a gorgeous, moderately vigorous rose, growing very upright and stiff- perfect for a pillar. The habit and blooms certainly warrant growing this rose. However, the reported fragrance is apparently fickle for many. My planting is in its 4th spring and has only now developed a moderate fruity-myrrh scent. In prior years it was completely scentless.
