'Comte de Champagne' rose References

The growth is broad and bushy. The Comte de Champagne introduced Rosa gallica 'Officinalis' from Damascus in 1250. David Austin, 2001. [...] This rose is named after Taittinger's finest champagne. Their president, M Claude Taittinger, is a descendant of Thibaut IV, Count of Champagne and Brie, who is reputed to have introduced R. gallica ‘Officinalis’ (The Apothecary's Rose) from Damascus on his return from the 7th Cruscade in 1250. He was a great lover of roses and celebrated them in poetry.
